More About Us
Our History
First Christian Church was first established in 1890. The building we are in now was built in 1924 (with many updates since then). Over and again, we have reaffirmed our desire to stay in the downtown area and continue to address the unique needs that come with a downtown location. We are part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a protestant denomination built around inclusion and finding “wholeness in a fragmented world.”
What should I expect on Sunday morning?
Our Sunday service is an informal gathering. Music includes our choir, traditional and newer hymns, and communion every week. We have Sunday school classes during service for children and youth ages 4 through high school most weeks. The fourth Sunday of each month, our folk musicians provide music and our kids stay in church. The folk musicians are an intergenerational, acoustical group with musicians ranging from 13 – 80. Everyone is welcome at our church. Services are about an hour. We do livestream our services on Facebook Live each week for homebound or long-distance friends.
Our Community Partners
We have an over 30 year history hosting 12-step recovery group in our space. You can find a meeting here almost every day of the week. Since 2020, we have been building up our community partnerships through a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with several non-profit groups utilizing our building for office space or direct aid and outreach to our community. Our community partners include:
Ancient Ways Marimba Group
Our Vision and Values
We are a radically inclusive community seeking out folks who want to be active changemakers in our neighborhood, region, and around the world. We are constantly finding ways to remove barriers for full inclusion into our community. We seek out and support opportunities for physical, emotional, and spiritual hope and healing.
